Architensions, Project Sangha

This by That matched design and research office Architensions with their client, a local developer, to realize an affordable housing prototype in Yangon, Myanmar. Architensions drew upon their own research into envisioning new modes of collective living, and architecture at the intersection of the political, social, and environmental networks .

The construction of the affordable housing prototype focuses on renewable local resources such as timber for the structure, locally sourced bricks for the envelope, metal for the roofing materials, and the cladding of the collective modules. Seven housing units are deployed on an almost flat site bordered by a river on one side and act as an experiment in collective living for middle-class young professionals in Yangon.

Following the history of collective housing in South Asia, the project proposes collective functions to improve people relationships, promote culture, and preserve heritage while simultaneously implementing accessibility to resources and services. Sharing resources is at the center of an environmental strategy that allows the community living in the units to recycle materials and water, and consolidate supporting spaces, such as laundries, mechanical spaces, and trash rooms, promoting a community-led housing practice that could serve as a model for the future.

In progress, expected completion 2025.
